Video Projection Screen Frame Made of Doors

Instead of a bare white video screen, made a frame around it using solid wood doors, closet doors, and a cabinet door. Doing this you have to cross cut the doors and also cut a 45 degree angle at the same time. Then cut another 45 degree angle so that doors fold together making a 90 degree. I also spliced other doors and a cabinet door into the frame. I wanted to do more splicing pieces into it, but got very time consuming. Works well with the room having an Urban Outfitters creative flow.

Pallet Stage Design

Collected pallets and realized they come so many different sizes and are heavy. Decided to make my own pallets using lighter materials like 1/4 sanded ply and harvested elements of real pallets to add to my created pallets. Taped off and painted white strips to catch lighting. Center pallet design has a projector aimed to shoot motion logo for what ever ministry using the room, and also motion graphics during worship. We discussed going floor to ceiling and overhead with the design, but this is all the time and money we could give to it. Video mapping would be awesome on this!

I have used the trusses for so many applications. I screwed a 4'x4' plywood base to the bottoms to give a bigger footing. Then strapped small movers and small projectors on top. Since they are black they hide well and give moving lights multiple levels behind the set. In other blogs they are the tower cubes and in another have white tires hanging from the fronts. These of coarse can't and shouldn't have heavy lights hanging from them.

Circle Band Risers

Built these round band risers 8-5' and 4-8' for Celebration Church in Georgetown/Austin Texas. Ps. Joe Champion has a great staff and nice facility and room to grow. These risers were built for their two main stages, so they would be identical. Good tools make the job easier and more fun. I'm a big Ridgid fan, love the Fuego series. Most of my tools are Ridgid, because of lifetime warranty agreement, and because they make some of the best tools. Bosch makes the best jigsaw and has many other great tools. I like Dewalts miter saws and I can't afford Festool or Laguna. There is a new tool review magazine that comes out every year comparing tools. Has been very helpful when considering purchasing a new tool. Harbor Freight has many tools to choose from and cost is much cheaper, but never know how long they will last. Craftsman has been a leader for many years, but think there are better tools for the same price. You can always rent tools from the Home Depot rental to get a job done, but maybe better to just purchase the same tool and have it for next project.

I made this from an old upright piano, took pieces off of it and then made the body. It's a custom fit to for our keyboard and has a better look than your average keyboard stand. I blogged this already, but was showing a modification, took 9 inches off the top. Better view of keyboardist.

Quick stage, two days of cutting circles out of 10 sheets of MDF. Huntsville Master's Commission helped me paint them and then they were hinged and positioned on stage. Didn't have a much time, would have like to make each panel unique. More random, but still looks good.

Husky work lights

The Rock FWC production team, did a music video on the roof of our church for a special Echo (college/Career ministry). The band, Eyes Around, a local band, but are originally from Louisiana. The roof was cool, the city lights in the back ground was good, but it still needed something. Dustin Allison LD and I worked fast to throw this last idea together. I bought 5 Husky tube work lights. I have used these before at a Healing Place Late Nite @ the Varsity a few years ago. Tried it again, but got a little more out of them. Dustin plugged them into dimmer, so we could make them flash at different times. Since then Todd Freeman helped me hack into them and now we can control the blue LED at the top with two tails coming out. The youth have them now in their sanctuary, and being next to all the guitars and keyboard, we had to take the florescent out due to the ballast hum. Fairly simple modification, need some one with electrical know-how. Still perfecting the blue LED on top, they seem to do their own thing right now.

This was a quick low budget Christmas set that came out pretty cool. No this is not Atomic Rental, we made these walls with paper. The lights are from Home Depot and painted white trees are from my cousins wedding. Honestly looks better in person and on TV, my camera phone pics are weak. Dear Santa.. Our friends, Daniel and Darla Hall (authenticphotograph.com), had a Bridal show and needed a new back ground for their booth. After much thought, circles became the idea and so we cut circle after circle. Jigsaw with an aggresive Bosch blade, and after we cut one we made another. This time using a flush trim router bit, using the first cut out as a templete. Took loosely 2 days of cutting, and painting in all the cracks of circles was heaps fun, ask Darla. Journey enjoyed the scrap circles laying around shop. Nice glasses!

Grandaddy in my shop

As a little boy, I loved to watch my Grandaddy in his shop work. He would find a scrap board and let me hammer nails all over it. We made all kinds of things in his shop, with a ceiling height maybe 6' ft. It was perfect for his height and mine, at the time. Was fun to hang with him to day in my shop and show him all my tools, he was very impressed and would use his cane and tap random things around the shop inspecting them. Very funny.

This was our merch table for Verge camp this year. Had to assemble at the camp, so that always makes designing something more difficult. Used liquid nails for the paint cans lids, that were left over from the stage. Note to self , liquid nails does not dry quick, instead used velcro. Perfect, should have thought of that to begin with. Corroplast, plywood, 2x2, and sweet graphics by our youth pastor Scott Silcox.

Pink Teacher Podium/Lecturn

This is my sister's pink teacher podium I made for her about 2 years ago. Has held up well, has casters at the bottom, so it can be moved out of the way. Used bendable plywood, which is the coolest part of this, the front has a real tight curve and there was nothing at home depot that would hold this curve. It comes 4x8 1/2'' thick, but cost like $40. When you bend it, it cracks and you think it is about to break, but is made for the abuse. Other than that the podium is very much pink.

Church Guest Welcome Center Formica

This project has taken me some time, but is finally complete.. I think. It's The Rock Family Worship Center's "Guest Central". A place where first time guest can come and meet leadership, who will then help them get connected. The kiosks computers use Fellowship One, built in scanners and small printers. Thanks to Bobby Lynn for help framing, Larry Grate helped with formica and electrical, Todd Freeman helped with electrical, hanging boxes, installed a switch to lightbox, and Scott Silcox graphic design/print, big help thank you guys!

MDF Coroplast Concave Stage

Sorry all these pictures were taken by my phone, will get better ones soon. Made 3, 10' structures, don't know what to call them, LED inside to light up inside, and gobo patterns cropped hitting fronts. The 6 panels are corroplast framed by wood, semi transparent material. and then the objects between are boxes from the Hunstville airport. They were throwing them away to update terminal. I got a dozen of them, used 5, and framed plexi in the fronts and mounted LED bars in them. The top and the bottom can be different colors. In the pictures they are all green at the time I was taking pictures. This set can change any color or color combos. Choir risers also light up. New set for the Rock Family Worship Center, Huntsville Alabama, lasting til Easter.

We actually set up the set in our youth room before we transported to San Destin, Florida where camp was held. You can see the wooden trusses I made that used to be the cubed towers.

Tires primed and painted white, clip on work lights, extention cords, power strips and cube taps. Put LED Pixel Ranges at the botton of truss shinning up to light tires. Moving lights on top of trusses, and crowd blinders on travel cases shinning through the back of set. Really cool look.

Pastor Henry Lee, NASA rocket engineer, help us build this rotating giant milk carton. He found an old fan and mounted it to the bottom of the cylinder base and used a dimmer to control speed of spin. He made the carton with cardboard, dryer vent coming out of the side.Very cool, thank you Pastor Henry. This was much easier for you than sending man to the moon.

Scaffolding looks great, but is really heavy. Lots of pieces and lots of climbing. Worked perfect to hang back lights, blinders, ML, and screen on. This fit our budget, just be ready to work.

Just showing thoughts and ideas drawn out to start seeing what it could look like. I use drawing paper and colored pencils, and sometimes I'll make a model to scale. It's not high tech, but forces you to make decisions on what the project is going to look like. Graph paper keeps everything to scale. I am working on learning a 3d program to express ideas even more accurately.

This is at The Rock Family Worship Center-Ps. Rusty Nelson. I bought 2x6x16 spruce and ripped them down on my table saw making 2x2x16. Made cubed towers 8', 10', 12' and wrapped back side with stretch fabric. You can front light and put LED inside to illuminate. We have used these towers so many times for all kinds of events like Easter '08 in the above pictures, and now I took all the material off and made them into wooden trusses that we used for youth camp.

Bruce Adams, again worked some magic with the cross. He cut the tree down, and borrowed a friends portable saw mill and trimed the front and back of the tree. Welded bands and rings on it and welded a metal stand. The most awesome cross I've ever seen. It was a beast though, heavy!

River Center banners and risers-HPC Easter

The banners frames where huge, and was a challenge of transporting them to The River Center. This was for Healing Place Church Easter sunday. Bruce Adams came up with using galvanized pipe and bronzing bolts and nuts in the pipe, so all we had to do is screw them together to extend the frame. Made the banner taunt with the same way they do billboards on the road. The choir risers were framed with wood and wrapped with white packaging material I found. Cheaper than spandex, but could be punctured if not careful.

I used a lot of styrofoam at one time, it's easy to cut compared to wood. Not a big fan of hot knifes, because it's hard to keep the cut square with the piece, not to mention slow. I've heard of people making a hot knife out of a car battery and coat hangers. What worked great for me is a jig saw with an aggressive blade cuts clean and keeps everything square on the sides. Use the 4x8 pink sheet foam over the white kind that comes apart in little beads. The thing is styrofoam is so fragile, and has a high risk of breaking. Keep in mind when cutting text, to keep all lines straight, or it wont be believable that it is professionally done. I think the biggest trick is keep people from knowing it was done with styrofoam. There are ways of covering the foam to seal it for painting. There are machines that will cut 3d scupltures out of huge blocks. Can be cool.

Homemade Spandex Stretch Shapes

Stretchhouse.com is a great resource to buy wide bolts of spandex. You can buy pre-made shapes from Rosebrand.com. Be careful when positioning shapes, especially the 3 pointed shape. People seem to see other things, like bikini bottoms and tops. Not trying to send peoples mind in that direction when they are at church.

Healing Place Church sermon series "Romance". When printing banners, the cost is by the square foot, so we cropped the images into smaller images in order to stay within budget. With limitations you are always challenged, but make it happen, stay with the vision and design. The Sign was not easy, found the light sockets at Blue Bayou theme park. They gave me a box full of them. They were perfect, couldn't find them online, easy wiring. Looked good on camera in the money shot.

4'x8' Luan Boxes Plexi Design

This was at Healing Place Church, boxes... The big box had color mixing lights in them, and other 4x8 boxes had plexi glass mounted to the back, with some amazing rigging by Bruce Adams. Boxes made from luan and 1x2 and plexi fronts. The R2D2 as some called it was a really cool light that was made from wood dowels and spandex material and LED light inside. Again a masterpiece of Bruce Adams, I really liked the little light.
